Carter Vaughn Findley

Carter V. Findley is president of the World History Association and professor of history at Ohio State University, where he and John Rothney co-founded the world history program. He received Ohio State’s Distinguished Research Award in 2000. A specialist in Turkish studies with a lengthy bibliography, Dr. Findley has also written two major books on Ottoman history, both published by Princeton University Press: BUREAUCRATIC REFORM IN THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE: THE SUBLIME PORTE, 1789-1922 (1980) and the prize-winning OTTOMAN CIVIL OFFICIALDOM: A SOCIAL HISTORY (1989). He has been a visiting professor at both the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris, 1994) and Bilkent University (Ankara, 1997) as well as a visiting member at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1981-1982). Dr. Findley received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1969.

John Alexander Murray Rothney

John Alexander Murray Rothney is professor of history at Ohio State University, where he and Carter Findley co-founded the world history program. His areas of specialization include the history of modern France and twentieth-century world history. Dr. Rothney’s books include BONAPARTISM AFTER SEDAN (Cornell University Press, 1969) and THE BRITTAN AFFAIR AND THE CRISIS OF THE ANCIENT REGIME (Oxford, 1969). He has also published a number of articles in scholarly journals, including his latest project, a work entitled “France Since DeGaulle: An Interpretative History.” Dr. Rothney received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1964.

Chapter 11 (retitled The Superpowers, Europe, and the Cold War, 1945–1970) and Chapter 12 (retitled The Superpowers, Europe, and the Cold War, 1970–1990) have been completely rewritten. They were restructured by closely analyzing how the three major regions of the West--the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc, Western Europe, and the United States--were impacted during each decade following World War II. Chapter 11 also dedicates a new section to understanding the pivotal year of 1968 and its effect on policy and socio-political relations throughout the world.
Chapter 17, The World Since 1990, and Chapter 18, Twenty-First Century Prospect, have been thoroughly revised and updated. Chapter 17 now takes a closer look at the economic growth of India and China, post-communist transitions in Eastern Europe, and the latest developments of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Chapter 18 examines the impact of the global financial crash, the latest in the war on terror and international environmental initiatives, and the most recent implications that continue to evolve for mass society as a whole.
The opening vignettes for many of the chapters have been revamped and updated to more actively engage students. For example, the Chapter 1 vignette now considers the 2008 Beijing Olympics as both a showcase of China’s development and a microcosm of global integration. The all-new vignette in Chapter 3 recounts the vivid memories of Britain’s last living World War I veteran, former Private Harry Patch, ninety years after the fact. Chapter 16’s vignette on the 1989 Tienanmen massacre looks back on the events from their twentieth anniversary.
Extensively revised and completely up to date, end-of-chapter “Suggestions for Further Reading” reflect the best scholarship available on all of the issues examined in the text.
