Today's Technician: Manual Transmissions and Transaxles Classroom Manual and Shop Manual 7th Edition by Jack Erjavec/Michael Ronan

Overview

Reflecting the latest ASE Education Foundation tasks, the fully updated Seventh Edition of Today’s Technician: Manual Transmissions & Transaxles covers must-know topics including dual-clutch systems, limited-slip differential designs, and all-wheel drive systems, as well as essential safety concepts and major components of the transmission system and subsystems. New material throughout the text gives readers an up-to-date understanding of the latest automotive technology and key advances in the fast-changing automotive industry. The authors have revised sections on electronic controls of transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials to feature the latest reprogramming techniques today’s technicians need to know. Covering both fundamental theory and practical job skills, the text includes a Classroom Manual reviewing every topic for Manual Drive Train and Axles, and a hands-on Shop Manual with full-color photo sequences and detailed job sheets, including service and repair tasks based on the latest MLR, AST, and MAST task lists.

Michael Ronan

Michael Ronan has taught automotive drive train courses in the Alfred State College Automotive Department for thirty years. He arrived at the college after working as a Rolls Royce technician and owning a transmission shop. A member of the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association for 28 years, he has been a testing proctor for that organization during that entire period. Ronan holds a bachelor's degree from SUNY Fredonia and has attended hundreds of hours of manufacturer and industry training. He has served the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) for 15 years as a subject matter expert in the development of both the A2 Automatic Transmissions/Transaxles and the A3 Manual Drive Train & Axles certification tests. He currently serves on the NATEF team reinventing the ASE recertification process. Ronan has also served as an automotive textbook and online resource reviewer on many projects, and he continues to work as a drive train specialist in summer months.
  • Strong references to relearning and reprogramming techniques make it easier for instructors to teach the latest technologies, including updating modules used for electronic clutch, transmission, and transfer case control.
  • Enhanced sections on electronically controlled dual-clutch transmissions and transaxles help prepare students to service and repair these complex and increasingly commonplace units with confidence.
  • New and updated photo sequences of transmission and transaxle disassembly and assembly give students a clear understanding of what to expect when performing similar procedures in the lab and on the job.
  • Expanded sections on new-technology differentials expose students to the wide variety of final drive components found in this increasingly complex component.
  • New material on electronically controlled all-wheel drive systems and their relationship to stability control and other management systems provides students with a useful understanding of the connected systems found in today’s automobiles.
  • The Classroom Manual combines thorough coverage and abundant, relevant illustrations to bring fundamental theory and key concepts to life.
  • Practical service procedures and real-life examples of common repair situations are based on ASE Education Foundation tasks to prepare students for effective on-the-job performance. Striking full-color photographs illustrate actual repairs so students know what to expect when performing a procedure on the job.
  • The authors' engaging writing style and easy-to-understand presentation make even complex technical concepts easier for students to master.
  • A full-color design, extensive photo series, and other visual material help clarify important concepts and provide students with useful real-world references for hands-on procedures.
  • Content in the Shop Manual and Classroom Manual is clearly cross-referenced, making it easy for students to use either or both volumes to access all relevant information on a given topic.
