Danielle Velardi

Danielle Cahill Velardi (Ph.D, Catholic University of America, 1992) is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at Christopher Newport University where she teaches Spanish language, literature and culture courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She has received several CIBER grants to present and attend workshops on Spanish for the Professions. Her fields of interests are broad and include contemporary popular Spanish culture and literature, the integration of film and technology in the classroom, foreign language pedagogy and Business Spanish.

Roberta Lavine

Roberta Z. Lavine (Ph.D., Catholic University of America, 1983) is an Associate Professor of Spanish and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Maryland, where she is also Adjunct Associate Professor in English as Second/Foreign Language. She teaches business Spanish and Cross-Cultural Communication at the undergraduate level and TESOL at the graduate level. Her interests include educational technology and second language pedagogy. She was a Fulbright scholar in Chile and co-edited a volume on technology and teacher training, Preparing and Developing Technology-proficient L2 Teachers. She co-directs a program for educational reform in Latin America, where she implemented the Diplomado en Educación Universitaria, the first of its kind in Ecuador. She was named Professor Emerita at the Universidad Tecnológica Equinoccial, Ecuador, for her numerous efforts on behalf of Ecuadorean education. Lavine has received the University of Maryland Award for Innovation in Teaching with Technology, as well as a major grant to transform classes from a traditional to a blended format.

Paula Croci

Paula Croci earned her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language & Literature from Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is a Professor of 20th Century Literature in UBA’s Department of Philosophy and Arts, and also teaches Semiology as part of UBA’s Ciclo Básico Común (Freshman Core Curriculum). She has specialized in the teaching of Spanish and Latin American literature to SFL learners since 1999, and has participated in several exchange programs at Universidad de Belgrano (UB) and Universidad de El Salvador (USAL). In 2009, she joined the Universidad de San Andrés (UdeSA) to design and teach intensive Spanish courses for The Lauder Institute Summer Immersion Program in Buenos Aires and Madrid.

Many activities ask students to go out into the world to find information, to simulate real-world experiences, or to engage with the technology they use day-to-day. In one project, students are asked to become "blogueros”, and in another, students discuss their shopping habits and favorite brands as part of a simulated market research task.
  • TAILORED FOR THE BLENDED CLASSROOM. Rutas is designed to facilitate the classroom as a place of communication first and foremost. Initial presentations and practice of vocabulary and grammar concepts, as well as reading, audio and video content, can be completed fully online. When the student arrives in the classroom, their Classroom Manual provides only communicative activities to help instructors maximize the amount of in-class speaking time.
  • EMPHASIS ON CRITICAL THINKING. One of the issues foreign language instructors often face is the difference between students' language level and their intellectual level. The challenge is how to find activities that challenge students intellectually while not exceeding the appropriate language level. Rutas contains a variety of activities that ask students to look beneath the surface, while giving them the linguistic support to express opinions. Rutas' approach encourages students to take stances on contemporary issues and gain confidence expressing ideas in their second language.
