Jansma/Kassen/Denie-Higney’s ATELIER, 2e, is designed to introduce all new content online. Kim Jansma

Kimberly Jansma received her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. She was Senior Lecturer and French language program director at UCLA for more than 30 years where she taught language and linguistics courses and was in charge of instructor development. In addition, she directed UCLA's Summer French language program in Paris. Dr. Jansma's research interests include pragmatics, technology-enhanced language learning and performance assessment. She has published several pedagogical texts and presented her research at major conferences. Dr. Jansma is a recipient of UCLA's Distinguished Lecturer Award and the Copenhaver Award for Innovation in Teaching with Technology.

Margaret Ann Kassen

Margaret Ann Kassen, who received her Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin, is Associate Professor and past Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She teaches undergraduate French and applied linguistics courses and works with graduate and undergraduate teacher preparation. Her research interests include foreign language writing, performance assessment, technology-enhanced language learning and instructor development. In addition to presenting at conferences, Dr. Kassen has published articles on technology and writing and edited a volume on developing self-direction in foreign language learners.

Laurence Denié-Higney, Contributing Author

Laurence Denié-Higney is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies at the University of California in Los Angeles, where she teaches language, civilization and literature courses. She holds a ‘doctorat' from l’université de Nantes in International relations and a PhD from The Catholic University of America in Francophone literature. Her interests include content-based instruction, second language acquisition and French for Specific Purposes. Her research concentrates on the Algerian writer Mohammed Dib and second language acquisition. She has presented papers at major conferences and has articles published on Mohammed Dib’s works. She is the recipient of les Palmes académiques.

  • PERSPECTIVES CULTURELLES. This program features updated cultural perspectives in each module. Students learn about inclusive language and the use of preferred pronouns influenced by cultural shifts in French European and Canadian contexts. The family theme includes changes in marriage and family structures in Québec, France and the French African world. Students learn how Sénégal, the RDC and other Francophone countries in plurilingual Africa deliver kindergarten and first grade education using regional languages. Attention to environmental issues has also been woven into several modules.
  • NEW READINGS. Updated readings include a television interview with Kylian Mbappé after his success at the World Cup, an excerpt from Gaël Faye’s Petit Pays featuring a young boy reminiscing about his childhood in Burundi during the Tutsi Hutu conflict and the portrait of three young environmental activists.
  • UPDATED VOCABULARY. This edition acknowledges and incorporates the preferences and concerns of Gen Z which often significantly deviate from those of previous generations. For example, the smart phone has replaced many traditional objects and devices like earbuds and scooters have become prevalent. Environmentally-related themes are included as well as updates to topics, including télétravail, new apps and technologies and new ways of hanging out and making friends. Changes in popular culture include famous people, current events and media.
  • LES COPAINS FILM. In this film, shot on location in Paris, students see the functional language they are learning come to life as they watch three friends tell stories, talk about what they like, give advice, complain and converse about other social situations. Each episode is now prominently labeled in the manual and MindTap, allowing instructors and students to conveniently locate and access it along with its corresponding activities.
  • MINDTAP CONNECTIONS. Icons and notes have been added so instructors can easily identify activities that have print and online components or counterparts.
  • COMMUNICATIVE VIDEO ACTIVITES. Located online, these communication activities provide students with opportunities to practice speaking through simulated, real-life conversations with a diverse range of native speakers from around the world.

  • ONLINE ACTIVITIES. The program is distinct in that the online learning platform is meticulously crafted to introduce new material through a carefully sequenced combination of narrated videos and images, followed by practice. This makes the program useful for fully online, hybrid, flipped or traditional classroom settings. Even for a traditional classroom, assigning Jérémie, the online grammar teacher, allows the classroom instructor to have more time for communicative activities.
  • UNIQUE STUDENT MANUAL. The Atelier Class Manual provides high interest themes with well scaffolded activities that offer students the support they need to discuss topics of genuine personal interest. This scaffolding helps bridge the gap between students’ limited French proficiency and the more extensive thoughts they’d like to express. For example, on the topic of living situations, students receive an extensive list of amenities which they are asked to prioritize. This results in interesting, meaningful interactions in the classroom.
  • DIVERSE FRANCOPHONE PERSPECTIVES. Francophone perspectives are consistently incorporated within its Module themes and the Perspectives Culturelles features. For example, the topic “travail en évolution” introduces what young people in the French-speaking world look for in the work world and shows the increased importance of a business’s values. It profiles a young French woman and Canadian man talking about their work and what matters most to them in their jobs.
