The Learning Path consists of five steps that characterize not only the stage of a student’s progression through the content, but also the way in which they interact with the content at that stage.
Ready? is the student’s first exposure to the topic and helps them to anticipate the material they will be learning. This step prepares students for the learning experience by expressing clear learning objectives and providing strategies for mastering the content, including drawing from prior experience with the topic.
Learn it! presents new content—structures, vocabulary, culture, and pronunciation—through text, audio, video, and images. Content is presented in manageable “chunks,” which facilitates students’ absorbing and processing of the material. Brief Try it! activities accompany the content presentations, allowing students to put the new concepts to work right away and helping them to quickly assess their understanding of the new content. Learn it! content presentations and Try it! activities appear on the same screen, so students may easily refer back to the presentation while they are working on the assessments. In this step, students are given immediate feedback and are permitted multiple attempts; the goal is to ensure students’ understanding before they move on to more in-depth practice.
Students have learned the content; now they are ready to Practice it! This step consists of graded activities that are designed to check students’ comprehension of vocabulary, structures, and culture topics using a variety of activity styles and contexts. This varied practice is necessary to ensure students’ thorough comprehension and retention of the material. Through this step students gain confidents, as there is no shortage of opportunities to practice.
Use it! gives students a chance to use what they are learning to express themselves creatively in a more personal way. These open-ended activities test both written and oral abilities, and can be submitted online or prepared for class discussion. Everything that a student needs to complete an assignment—including audio, video, recording, and playback—is embedded in MindTap®, so there is no need to incorporate external platforms or applications. Use it! activities comprise 25% of the module’s total activities.
The Got it? step challenges students to recall what they have learned and evaluate their abilities. Students will use a checklist of “Can do…” statements that specify what they are expected to be able to accomplish after completing the module. Students may spend time refreshing their learning before demonstrating and verifying their ability to use what they have studied. This step brings the learning experience full circle: students have learned it, tried it, practiced it, used it, and now they’ve Got it!
