Overview
The highly successful INTERMEDIATE SPANISH series offers a thought-provoking, contextualized review of the fundamentals while building new skills for a higher level of communication. This three-volume set, CONVERSACIÓN Y REPASO, CIVILIZACIÓN Y CULTURA, and LITERATURA Y ARTE, skillfully combines comprehensive grammar coverage with relevant themes that challenge students to consider each topic from multiple viewpoints. LITERATURA Y ARTE introduces students to literary works by both Spanish and Spanish-American writers and the rich and diverse contributions of Hispanic artists to the fine arts. The accompanying exercises stress the development of reading, writing, and speaking skills and include vocabulary-building and conversational activities. One of the unique features of the program is the seamless relationship between each of the three volumes, which can be used alone or in conjunction with each other to create a flexible, thorough, interdisciplinary Spanish course.
- The expanded "Estrategias de lectura" section provides students with insightful strategies designed to teach them how to break down authentic readings into manageable, comprehensible pieces for analysis.
- New readings by Miguel Angel Asturias and Ruben Dario increase opportunities for cross-cultural comparison by offering greater coverage of Central American literature.
- Five newly featured artists, three of whom are women, provide a fresh perspective on the significant impact of Hispanic artists in the world of fine art.
- LITERATURA Y ARTE exposes students to literature, film, and art while supporting the grammar they have learned in the core text.
- The book helps develop students' reading skills and introduces them to literary and cultural concepts that enhance their understanding and appreciation of the unique qualities of Spanish-speaking civilization.
- Readings that expose students to literature are level appropriate and thematically linked to the core text, CONVERSACIÓN Y REPASO.
- Pre-reading activities are designed to introduce students to new vocabulary, provide them with the strategies necessary to absorb and understand the content, and encourage them to reflect on the themes covered in the reading.
- Post-reading activities not only test comprehension but build on the strategies and reflections set forth in the "Preparación para la lectura" activities.
- Each chapter presents a brief essay about an artist from the Spanish-speaking world, followed by several representations of that artist's work.
- The importance of music as an art form is emphasized from the beginning of each chapter, with the chapter opener featuring a brief discussion of a song related to the theme of the unit.
- Unidad 12 is devoted to the portrayal of the current situation of Hispanics in the United States and their continued contributions to both Hispanic and U.S. culture.
- Subscribers to the Premium Companion Website have access to songs featured in the textbook via an iTunes® playlist and lyrics to all included songs.
