Overview
The text that set the standard for students working toward certification in special education has been revised and updated to meet the needs of a new generation of teachers and students. Written for undergraduate and graduate students who are majoring in general education or special education, the book features a cross-categorical emphasis that makes it suitable for a broad number of courses-including those aimed at teaching students with related disabilities and those teaching students on the Autism Spectrum. The authors describe the characteristics of learning disabilities as well as other disabilities, and offer practical teaching strategies for general education teachers, special education teachers, school psychologists, administrators, and related professionals. Pre-service and in-service classroom teachers, who are increasingly responsible for teaching students with special needs within general education or inclusive classrooms, will find LEARNING DISABILITIES AND RELATED DISABILITIES: STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS, 13th Edition, especially helpful.
- An appealing new full-color design with a larger page size helps to enhance student learning.
- New Learning Objectives correlated to the main sections in each chapter show students what they need to know to process and understand the information in the chapter. After completing the chapter, students should be able to demonstrate how they can use and apply their new knowledge and skills.
- New lists of standards to be addressed appear at the beginning of each chapter. Chapters 1 to 10 include the Council of Exceptional Children (CEC) Initial Level Special Education Standards as approved by the National Council for the Accreditation of Special Education. Chapters 11 to 14 include relevant Common Core State Standards as well as relevant CEC Standards.
- New “Digital Download” notations throughout the text identify tips, boxes, figures, and tables available for students to download, customize, and use in the classroom as well as to review key concepts. A complete sample IEP is also available for download.
- “New Did You Get It?” quizzes allow students to measure their performance against the learning objectives in each chapter. One question for each learning objective is featured in the textbook to encourage students to go to CengageBrain.com, take the full quiz, and check their understanding.
- A cross-categorical emphasis reflects the growing number of courses aimed at teaching students with mild disabilities (e.g. ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome) that are part of many states' certification requirements.
- Content includes instruction in general education classes, complemented by strategies and ideas in “Including Students in General Education” boxes.
- “TeachSource Video Case Activities” are integrated into the chapters, introducing videos (viewable at Education CourseMate) that help students relate important chapter content to real-life scenarios in educational settings.
- The book covers the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA–2004), and comprehensive coverage of Response-to-Intervention (RTI).
- “Teaching Tips” boxes provide examples of practical instruction models, methods, and strategies.
- “Student Stories” with accompanying reflective questions are interspersed throughout each chapter, offering real-life situational snapshots that illustrate the topic under discussion.
- Brief, accessible “I Have a Kid Who…” case studies allow students to apply the content that they have read about.
- Chapter-ending material includes point-by-point summaries of major ideas, key terms, and Questions for Discussion and Reflection.
- A glossary at the end of the text includes the definitions of all key terms listed at the ends of chapters.
