Overview
Zimbalist/Machado's EARLY CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES IN LANGUAGE ARTS, 12th edition, responds to national legislation, professional standards and public concern about the development of young children's language and foundational literacy skills by providing current research-based instructional strategies in early language development. Activities throughout emphasize the relationship among listening, speaking, reading, writing (print) and viewing in language arts areas. Theory is followed by how-to suggestions and examples of classic stories, poems, finger plays, games and more. Future teachers learn how to best interact with children to promote appropriate language development and how to create a print-rich classroom environment. In addition to improved integration of professional standards, the new edition includes an emphasis on diversity and inclusion and tips for adapting curricula.
- NEW! Improved integration of professional standards helps students make connections between what they are learning in the text and the standards. Chapters begin with a list of standards and benchmarks to be covered, including NAEYC's Early Childhood Accreditation Standards and Assessment Items (2019); NAEYC'S DAP: Developmentally Appropriate Practice Guidelines (2020); and Common Core Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy. Icons identify standards-related content throughout, while a complete list of standards appears in the standards correlation chart on the book's inside covers.
- NEW! A stronger emphasis on diversity and inclusion focuses on the importance of respecting and understanding each child's uniqueness and of creating language-rich environments to address the needs of children from various cultural backgrounds, English-language learners and children with special needs. New lists of materials and references at the ends of many chapters provide recommended books for the classroom and readings along with additional resources that celebrate diversity and inclusion.
- Chapter Learning Objectives correlate with main headings throughout the chapter and with the end-of-chapter summary. The objectives highlight what students need to know to process and understand the information in the chapter. After completing the chapter, students should be able to demonstrate how they can use and apply their new knowledge and skills.
- TeachSource Digital Downloads are downloadable -- sometimes customizable -- professional resources that help students immediately implement and apply chapter concepts in the field. By downloading these practical tools, preservice teachers can begin building a library of powerful resources. The downloads are flagged with a TeachSource Digital Download icon.
- Introduced in the text and viewable online, TeachSource Video footage from the classroom helps students relate key chapter content to real-life scenarios. Critical-thinking questions following each video provide opportunities for in-class or online discussion and reflection.
- Insightful Brain Connection boxes spotlight brain-based learning practices.
- A wealth of practical and classic examples of activities -- which can be used immediately -- make the text a useful addition to the student's resource library. These include research-based activities that promote children's reading success in preschool classes.
- Separate chapters on infants and toddlers enhance students' understanding of their communication abilities and of the important role of adult behavior in promoting language growth.
- Thoroughly up to date, the 12th edition uses current research as well as classic findings and recommendations.
