Overview
The ninth edition of CULTURE AND VALUES: A SURVEY OF THE HUMANITIES introduces students to the history of humankind through the lens of the humanities -- language and literature, art and architecture, music, philosophy, and religion -- from the dawn of civilization to the contemporary world. CULTURE AND VALUES encourages students to place their own backgrounds and beliefs in context and consider how understanding both their own and other heritages contributes to becoming a citizen of the world in the 21st century. Coauthor Lois Fichner-Rathus continues to bring her pedagogical expertise, clear conversational style, and love of teaching to this beautifully written and illustrated book. New and revised features encourage students to draw comparisons and connections as well as engage their critical thinking skills. Chapter previews, timelines, glossaries, and “Big Picture” reviews provide consistent pedagogical support throughout the text to help students master the material.
- NEW Available in MindTap, the online version of the text contains links via Questia to the full versions of the majority of literary excerpts discussed in the text.
- NEW Culture & Society features highlight relationships between cultural and social developments, both ancient and modern. An example featured topic is the “Theater of War” project in which contemporary screen and stage actors participate in readings of ancient Greek tragedies to heighten awareness of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- NEW Connections features draw parallels between works of art and literature, relay contemporary responses to ancient events, and offer engaging new perspectives on cultural figures and monuments. An example featured discussion centers on the use of computerized tomography (CT scanning) by Italian archaeologists excavating Pompeii to better understand the daily lives and habits of Pompeiian citizens prior to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE.
- NEW Religion features present essential aspects and tenets of belief systems past and present in clear and easy-to-locate places throughout the text.
- NEW Spotify playlists provide access to the music selections discussed by the authors. GO LISTEN icons in the text point students to all music selections.
- NEW Numerous new artworks and illustrations throughout enliven the text and engage students.
- NEW Introductions -- both to the text itself and to the Voices feature -- are available in the MindTap version of the book.
- CULTURE AND VALUES features provide a well-balanced blend of art, literature, philosophy, and music for every major culture and historical period -- all presented in a clear, conversational style.
- Coverage includes non-Western traditions in the humanities, including ancient South Asia, China, Japan, and Latin America, as well as an entire chapter on Islamic art.
- The timeline at the beginning of each chapter includes a listing of key events, providing students with historical context for the culture and values that developed and emerged during the period and location covered in the chapter.
- Compare + Contrast features, along with the new Culture & Society and Connections features, promote students’ critical thinking skills and encourage them to consider the larger context in which works were created.
- End of chapter glossaries help students master the material by providing an easy way to access and review key terms and their meanings.
- A comprehensive set of digital resources, available via MindTap and compatible with most LMS platforms, includes a host of resources and tools for both your course and your students. MindTap resources include an interactive e-book with zoomable images; links to related videos and Google Map locations; links to full versions of the literary works excerpted in the text; flashcards; quizzes; resources for research and writing; a downloadable note-taking guide with all chapter images for each chapter; streaming music; and more.
